The number of people living in relative poverty in the UK increased by half a million to 13.4 million, including four million children. Pensioners in relative poverty rose from 1.49 million to 1.69 million. Relative poverty is defined as living in households with income below 60% of the median. Work and Pensions Minister Diana Johnson deemed the levels of poverty unacceptable. Although the percentage of the population in poverty rose slightly from 19% to 20%, the change was not statistically significant according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies.
