Nine in 10 parents back social media ban for children, says Technology Secretary
Ministers are considering restricting social media access for children under 16, with an Australian-style option that forbids accounts for that age group. The consultation drew more than 80,000 responses, including 42,410 parents. Proposed measures also include app curfews and limits on more addictive features. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said a ban is definitely on the table and reported nine in 10 parents backed Australian-style restrictions. Her comments indicate the government is preparing to move toward restrictions.
"Parents overwhelmingly back Australian-style restrictions on social media for children, the Technology Secretary has said. Ministers are considering a ban on social media for under-16s and more than 80,000 people have responded to a consultation on whether to introduce restrictions."
