Ofcom officially investigating X over Grok nudification
"There have been deeply concerning reports of the Grok AI chatbot account on X being used to create and share undressed images of people - which may amount to intimate image abuse or pornography - and sexualised images of children that may amount to child sexual abuse material (CSAM). As the UK's independent online safety watchdog, we urgently made contact with X on Monday, January 5"
"The formal review will assess whether X understands the risk of UK users - including children - seeing illegal content on the platform, whether it has taken the appropriate steps to prevent access to illegal content, and its efforts to remove illegal content once posted. Offenses under the Online Safety Act can be punished with fines of up to £18 million ($24 million) or 10 percent of qualifying worldwide revenue, whichever is higher."
Ofcom opened an urgent investigation into X following reports that the Grok AI chatbot was used to create and share undressed images of people and sexualised images of children, potentially amounting to intimate image abuse and CSAM. Ofcom contacted X on 5 January and set a firm deadline of 9 January for an explanation; the company responded and an expedited assessment was carried out. The formal review will evaluate X's understanding of UK user risk, steps taken to prevent access to illegal content, and efforts to remove illegal material. Breaches can trigger fines up to £18 million or 10% of worldwide revenue and possible business disruption measures.
