One in three voters saw deepfakes of politicians ahead of local elections, poll shows
Polling of 2,005 adults by Opinium for Demos found 30% of voters had seen a deepfake or AI-generated video, audio clip, or image about an election candidate or politician in the month before local and devolved elections. The survey ran from 30 April to 6 May. The warning came two weeks before voters go to the polls in Makerfield. The contest could determine Britain’s next prime minister if Andy Burnham wins and challenges Sir Keir Starmer, expected to be the case. Deepfakes are digitally created and altered content, often fake images, videos, and audio recordings.
