Phil Woolas, 66, a former Labour MP and minister, passed away after battling glioblastoma for over a year. Elected in 1997 to represent Oldham East and Saddleworth, he served throughout Labour's entire 13-year period in government, holding ministerial positions including minister of state for local government, environment, borders, and immigration. Before politics, Woolas worked in television as a BBC Newsnight and Channel 4 News producer, and as head of communications at trade union GMB. He joined Labour at 16, was active in the Anti-Nazi League, and served as National Union of Students president from 1984 to 1986. After leaving politics in 2010, he established a political lobbying firm and chaired the Ace Centre, a charity providing assistive technology for disabled people with communication difficulties in his former constituency.
