Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has indicated the need for quick clarity on winter fuel payment adjustments for pensioners. After previously narrowing access to over 10 million pensioners, he aims to broaden eligibility amid pressure from Labour MPs. Treasury Minister Darren Jones highlighted the intention to target payments to those in need, excluding millionaires. Starmer emphasized the challenges faced by his government, including a 'completely broken' economy left behind. He dismissed the idea of raising taxes for growth, stating that high taxes are already a factor.
The sooner my government provides clarity on changes to the winter fuel payment, the better. We are reviewing which pensioners should receive the payment.
It was our duty to stabilise the economy and to fill in that 22bn black hole. I'm not going to resile from that.
I don't think you can tax yourself to growth - we have got high taxes as it is.
Payments will be targeted to those that need it the most; millionaires should not be getting subsidy for their energy bills.
