Whitehall's ability to adopt artificial intelligence technology risks being hamstrung by reliance on an unknown amount of legacy IT. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology is being positioned as the digital centre for government. Data on government tech spending quality is mixed, and contract and spending records remain difficult to connect, limiting visibility. The Procurement Act introduced requirements to publish full contract details for tech deals over £5m within 90 days to improve transparency. Use of required contract notices is increasing month by month, but some parts of government are publishing fewer notices than before, which could indicate non-compliance.
