Reform council leader survives no confidence vote
"This motion is about actions and behaviour. Politics is about rough and tumble but it's also about kindness and treating people as human beings. He asked us to judge him on his actions as leader, and his actions have fallen short."
"If we endorse this motion, we send a message to the public that voting does not matter. Garland encouraged councillors to reject this political theatre and stand firmly behind Councillor Finch."
"I stood strong with the community, and that questioning the integrity of Warwickshire Police's chief constable had been a call for clarity. There's nothing wrong with doing that."
George Finch, the UK's youngest council leader at 19, faced a no-confidence motion at Warwickshire County Council's full meeting. Green Party councillors initiated the vote, alleging he abused his leadership position. The motion cited incidents including a dispute with police over handling of a child rape case and a conflict with the council's chief executive regarding Pride flags. The vote resulted in 26 councillors supporting removal, 27 opposing it, and two abstaining. Finch characterized the motion as a political stunt and defended his actions, stating he stood with the community and sought clarity from police leadership. Fellow Reform councillor Neil Garland urged rejection of what he termed political theatre.
