Reform defends selection of Bangladeshi candidate
"I find it insulting to see people breaking into the UK and immediately being put up in free accomodation, receiving allowances, working illegally and accessing free education while I have done everything the right way."
"This is the kind of migration we want, people who pay to come here, who are educated, who work full time and pay taxes, people who integrate and help the community."
"This is why Reform is not the solution to fixing our countries [sic] problems. No foreigner should hold any position of power in this country."
A 23-year-old Bangladeshi-born man with indefinite leave to remain, Addy Mo Asaduzzaman, was selected as Reform UK's candidate for Portsmouth Central Southsea ward. The selection provoked hostile social-media comments arguing non-British-born people should not hold power. Councillor George Madgwick, local Reform group leader, denounced the comments as "frankly disgusting" and the abuse as "appalling" and defended the choice. Asaduzzaman arrived on a student visa, studied a Masters in electronic and electrical engineering at the University of Portsmouth, and described himself as a legal resident proud to call Portsmouth home who followed the proper immigration route.
