Rights groups call for EHRC to be downgraded over 'deeply disturbing' actions
"Earlier this month, the EHRC was accused of trying to ' bully ' the government into rushing out legislation based on its updated guidance on gendered facility provision. Following the UK Supreme Court's verdict on the FWS v Scottish Ministers in April - which determined the 2010 Equality Act's definition of a woman is based on biological sex - the EHRC began consulting on proposed changes to its code of practice on servics, public functions, and associations."
"The revisions, if implemented, would ban trans people from facilities, including toilets and changing rooms, consistent with their gender identity. An original version of its interim guidance, which the EHRC has since withdrawn, banned trans people from public facilities altogether. After a consultation period that was criticised for spanning less than six months, the regulator handed a finished version to equalities minister Bridget Philipson."
A coalition of six trans and human rights organisations formally challenged the Equality and Human Rights Commission's A-status accreditation and requested an immediate investigation by GANHRI, calling the regulator "not fit for purpose." The coalition described the regulator's actions as an "obsessive campaign to strip trans people of our basic rights." The EHRC has been accused of attempting to pressure the government to rush legislation based on updated guidance about gendered facility provision. Following a Supreme Court ruling affirming the 2010 Equality Act's sex-based definition of woman, the EHRC consulted on changes that would restrict trans people's use of toilets and changing rooms. An earlier interim version reportedly banned trans people from public facilities entirely. The consultation was criticised for lasting under six months, and the finished draft was handed to equalities minister Bridget Philipson but had not been published nearly a month later.
