Over a dozen senior Conservative MPs and peers have called on the UK government to recognize Palestine as a state, breaking party lines. In a letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, they emphasized the urgent need for recognition ahead of significant UN talks. The request follows increasing tensions after Israel's recent actions against Hamas, casting doubts on peace efforts. The MPs argue that recognizing Palestine aligns with justice, self-determination, and equal rights, citing that over 140 UN member states have already done so. They see this as an opportunity for the UK to lead in upholding international law.
For decades, the Palestinian people have endured occupation, displacement and systemic restrictions on their basic freedoms. Recognising Palestine would affirm our nation's commitment to upholding the principles of justice, self-determination and equal rights.
Recognition should not be treated as a distant bargaining chip but as a necessary step to reinforce international law and diplomacy. Prime minister, we stand ready to offer our public support for this decision.
