Shabana Mahmood says UK will seek reform of human rights convention
Briefly

Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood has stated that the UK will pursue reforms to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) to bolster public confidence in the rule of law. This move comes amid concerns over how human rights are being applied in specific court cases. Mahmood emphasized the need for changes in the ECHR at home and in Strasbourg, declaring that protecting rights should not come at the expense of public trust. The government plans to assess court applications of the right to freedom from degrading treatment and other articles of the convention.
The European convention on human rights is one of the great achievements of postwar politics. It has endured because it has evolved. Now, it must do so again.
We can preserve rights by restoring public confidence in them rather than give ground to populism.
Commitment is not the same as complacency.
Trust would disintegrate if human rights laws appear to protect the rule-breaker over the rule-follower.
