Manchester Metropolitan University rescinded all honorary awards previously granted to Peter Mandelson and stated that it no longer has any ties with him. Mandelson served as the university's chancellor from 2016 to 2024 and received an honorary doctorate on appointment and a commemorative medal at the end of his tenure. He was sacked as UK ambassador to the USA after revelations that he sent supportive messages to Jeffrey Epstein while Epstein faced sex offences charges. The university had previously discussed Mandelson's links to Epstein when a photograph of the two was made public and had been reassured there was no ongoing connection. The university expressed thoughts for Epstein's victims; Epstein died by suicide in August 2019 while awaiting trial.
