Wes Streeting criticises shortsighted' drug firms for rejecting pricing offer
"The pharmaceuticals industry signed up to the [pricing] deal with the previous government. When it came out more expensive to industry than expected, we put forward an unprecedented offer to bring down payment rates for all future years of the scheme and accelerate growth in the sector but the ABPI failed to reach an agreement. This was shortsighted and undermines our efforts to work collaboratively."
"I won't allow big pharma to rip off our patients or taxpayers. Life sciences are a great British success story. We want the NHS to not only benefit from the revolution in life sciences and medical technology, but to drive it. We remain committed to building equitable partne"
Health secretary Wes Streeting ended negotiations with the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry after the industry refused government proposals to cap revenues over the next three years. The disagreement concerns a voluntary scheme where the NHS sets a budget for branded medicines and companies repay any revenues above that budget. The scheme underwent review after it proved more costly to drug firms than expected. The impasse coincides with the launch of a 10-year NHS plan and the designation of life sciences as a high-growth industrial priority. Streeting characterized the industry's refusal as shortsighted and pledged to protect patients and taxpayers.
