Who is new deputy Labour leader Lucy Powell?
"'she was in Labour and she voted for Labour'"
"I cried the day I got the offer."
"As a northern comprehensive girl arriving in Oxford in 1993, I was a duck out of water."
Lucy Powell won the deputy leadership of the Labour Party by 87,407 votes to 73,536. Her mother delayed going into hospital during the 1974 general election to vote. Her father, a Labour activist, involved her in campaigning from age nine and rewarded her with a one pound note. Powell grew up in Didsbury, Manchester, an area transformed by gentrification. She initially studied chemistry at Oxford but left after one year and transferred to King's College London, where she felt more comfortable. She worked for Labour MPs including Glenda Jackson and Beverley Hughes and campaigned for Britain in Europe from 1998 to 2005. In 2010 she ran Ed Miliband's successful bid to lead the Labour Party.
