Women missing out' on motherhood because of delay' in men maturing - think tank
"Hundreds of thousands of women are missing out on having children, partly because of a delay in young men maturing into adulthood, a report has claimed. The Centre for Social Justice, a think tank founded by Tory MP Iain Duncan Smith, said around three million women aged between 16 and 45 are projected not to have children under current trends."
"The report said that, in the past, a 24-year-old man would have likely been married, had a child and have been working for a decade, but now men are only leaving home at the age of 25 on average."
"If birth trends were the same as their grandparents' generation, then around 2.4 million women would not have children. It means around 600,000 less women are having children, it said."
The Centre for Social Justice projects that around three million women aged 16-45 will not have children under current trends, compared to 2.4 million if birth rates matched their grandparents' generation. This represents a decline of approximately 600,000 women having fewer children. Multiple factors contribute to falling birth rates, including declining marriage rates and women having children at later ages. The report identifies male employment and education trends as significant contributors. Historically, 24-year-old men were typically married with children and employed for a decade, whereas contemporary men now leave home around age 25 on average. The report suggests encouraging younger marriage as one potential solution to address the UK's declining birth rate.
