Ecuador's Noboa wins presidential run-off, rival demands recount
Briefly

Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa has been re-elected in a runoff election, securing 55.8% of the vote against left-wing opponent Luisa Gonzalez. With a renewed four-year mandate, Noboa plans to enhance the country's economy and continue his aggressive approach towards cartel-related violence, which has surged in recent years. Gonzalez, contesting the results, cites electoral fraud and claims voter manipulation. Despite initial close polls, the election results indicate a significant voter shift, driven by concerns over rising drug-related violence, prompting Noboa's administration to confront these issues head-on.
Noboa, who was elected in snap elections in 2023, now has a full four-year mandate to continue his divisive mano dura (tough) crackdown on violence tied to drug trafficking.
Ecuadorians have spoken. From tomorrow morning, we will go to work, Noboa told supporters during a brief speech in his hometown of Olon, emphasizing commitment to his electoral promises.
Gonzalez told chanting supporters that the result was the worst and most grotesque electoral fraud in the history of Ecuador, highlighting the tension post-election.
The results came as a surprise after the first round in February, where Noboa finished just 16,746 votes ahead, suggesting a dramatic shift in voter sentiment.
