James Talarico has the best response to GOP accusations that he's vegan - LGBTQ Nation
Ken Paxton won the Texas Republican Senate primary runoff, starting the general election campaign season. Republicans signaled their main attack on Democratic state Rep. James Talarico by claiming he is a secret vegan. Talarico denied the allegation and responded with a joke about being an eighth-generation Texan who has eaten barbecue for years. His reply framed the vegan claim as weak compared with Paxton’s history of scandals. Those scandals began in 2008 with accusations that Paxton failed to disclose investments in companies that had contracts with the state while he served in the Texas House of Representatives.
"“He's a vegan!” Paxton said of Talarico in his victory speech last night. Talarico is not vegan, and he had a clever response to Paxton's accusation."
"“I'm an eighth-generation Texan,” Talarico said in an interview with MeidasTouch podcaster Ben Meiselas, before quipping: “I've been eating barbecue since before Ken Paxton's first indictment.” “If all they have on me is lying about me being a vegan, I feel pretty good about our chances this November.”"
"Talarico's response draws attention to Paxton's long history of scandals, which started in 2008 when he was accused of failing to disclose investments in companies that had contracts with the state when he was in the Texas House of Representatives."
