President Trump announced that Japan is initiating tariff negotiations with the US, making it one of the first countries to assess his flexibility regarding sweeping tariffs. In a Truth Social post, he expressed hope that the discussions would result in beneficial outcomes for both nations. This negotiation follows a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs and comes after offers from 15 nations for personalized trade deals were presented to the Trump administration. Currently, Japan faces a 24% tariff on exports to the US, with additional duties on cars still in effect.
Japan is coming in today to negotiate Tariffs, the cost of military support, and 'TRADE FAIRNESS'," Trump said in a Truth Social post.
It comes a day after the Trump administration said it had been presented with offers from at least 15 nations for bespoke trade deals.
Ahead of the 90-day pause, Japan was hit with 24% levies on exports to US.
A 10% universal rate still remains in place, though, as does a 25% duty for cars.
