Karl Rove Warns Trump He May Pay the Price' for Ken Paxton Endorsement: His Record in General Elections Isn't So Good'

Karl Rove warned that President Donald Trump could face political consequences for endorsing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the Republican primary. Paxton won the primary, but Rove noted that important political actions can produce adverse effects. He pointed to Paxton’s weaker performance compared with other statewide Republican candidates in 2018 and 2022, before later public scandals. Rove referenced allegations involving corruption, bribery, obstruction, securities fraud, and mishandling of sex-trafficking cases, along with a 2023 Republican-run Texas House impeachment. He said Paxton’s fundraising problems could divert money from other races and that Trump’s decision could cause some congressional Republicans to reconsider their relationship with Trump. He also cited Trump’s weaker general-election record, including discouraging turnout in Georgia runoffs and endorsing underperforming Senate candidates in multiple states.
