"A week before Alex was gunned down in the street - despite posing no threat to anyone - he was violently assaulted by a group of (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents," Schleicher said in a written statement. "Nothing that happened a full week before could possibly have justified Alex's killing at the hands of ICE on Jan 24."
"Just a peaceful legal observer."
Videos show Alex Pretti being forcefully taken to the ground by federal immigration agents after he allegedly kicked out a tail light during a Minneapolis protest on Jan. 13. The footage shows Pretti shouting and struggling, losing his coat while on the ground, and then breaking free or being released and scurrying away. When his back turns, a handgun appears visible in his waistband, but the videos do not show him reaching for it nor indicate whether agents saw it. A person familiar confirmed the man is Pretti and said he told his family about the confrontation. Pretti, 37, worked as an intensive care nurse at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center and was fatally shot by Border Patrol on Jan. 24. Homeland Security Investigations is reviewing the Jan. 13 incident and the new videos. An attorney for Pretti's parents said the earlier altercation did not justify the subsequent fatal shooting.
