A red hat, inspired by a symbol of resistance to Nazi occupation, gains traction in Minnesota
""It was just collective exhaustion," said Paul Neary, a shop employee."
""Minnesotans we're not going to say the big thing, but we often know what the big thing is just by looking at each other.""
""What's been happening in Minneapolis has been so egregious and awful and so destructive to our community," shop owner Gilah Mashaal said of federal agents' use of aggressive tactics."
Weekly knitting gatherings at Needle & Skein in Minneapolis grew somber amid the presence of federal immigration officials and the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Shop employee Paul Neary designed a red beanie, now known as the "Melt the ICE" hat, inspired by a 1940s Norwegian protest hat. The pattern was sold for $5 and raised nearly $400,000. The shop donated $250,000 to STEP (St. Louis Park Emergency Program) and the Immigrant Rapid Response Fund. The red hat and its message spread on social media internationally and drove local red yarn shortages.
