"It's starting to feel like home for me,"
"This is the best court in tennis, my favorite place to play, favorite tournament."
Ben Shelton, seeded sixth and 22 years old, beat Ignacio Buse 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in the US Open first round at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Shelton played the tournament's opening match at Arthur Ashe Stadium for the second straight year and described the court as his favorite place to play. Shelton recently won his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto, becoming the first American to win that event since Andy Roddick in 2003. Shelton saved all five break points faced and hit only five aces in the match. Since the start of 2024, Shelton is 21-0 against unseeded opponents in Grand Slams. He will have two days off before facing either Pablo Carreno Busta or Pablo Llamas Ruiz in the second round. Taylor Fritz, seeded fourth, played Emilio Nava, marking the first major with two American men seeded in the top eight since 2007. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Jakub Mensik also won their opening matches.
