FEMA and NOAA officials are unable to attend major hurricane and flood conferences due to travel restrictions imposed by the Trump administration. Traditionally, these agencies send experts to share knowledge and collaborate with local officials and researchers at events like the National Hurricane Conference. This year, only one federal speaker is scheduled compared to ten from the previous year. Conference organizers express disappointment over the lack of federal presence, which diminishes the sharing of vital disaster response expertise during the critical spring season.
It's so unfortunate that our federal partners are not able to attend, said Chad Berginnis, executive director of the Association of State Floodplain Managers.
Agencies such as NOAA and FEMA have for decades sent officials to hurricane and flood conferences, connecting them with local officials and researchers.
