Authorities say a Georgia teacher was killed in a prank gone wrong. A teen is charged with homicide.
"This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students. This would be counter to Jason's lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children."
"What made Jason so special was the way he did it. He never judged. He never forced anything on anyone. He simply loved people well. He met people where they were, lifted them up, and reminded them that they mattered."
Jason Hughes, a 40-year-old math teacher at North Hall High School in Georgia, died after being struck by a pickup truck driven by one of five teenagers who were toilet papering his home as a prank. The 18-year-old driver was arrested on a felony vehicular homicide charge, and four other teens faced misdemeanor charges. Hughes' family released a statement expressing their desire to prevent further tragedy by having charges dropped, noting Hughes knew and loved all five students and dedicated his life to investing in young people. Hughes was beloved at the school, where he coached multiple sports and led Bible studies for fellow coaches.
