Bob Baffert thrilled to win Santa Anita race honoring D. Wayne Lukas
"It would be easy for anyone to love training or just watching Splendora, a 5-year-old daughter of Audible who won her fourth straight start Saturday, and her first since last fall's Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. The 2-5 favorite cruised to a 2 3/4-length victory over Me and Molly McGee in 1:22.09 for seven furlongs."
""When I saw that this race was renamed for D. Wayne Lukas, I wanted to win this one," Baffert told reporters at Santa Anita. "I miss him. I miss talking to him. He would have loved this.""
""She is such a good filly. She just gives me chills," Baffert said. "She missed the break and got behind, but Juan [Hernandez] rode her with a lot of confidence.""
Bob Baffert won the Robert B. Lewis Stakes with Plutarch, marking his eighth consecutive win in that race and his 14th overall in the event formerly known as the Santa Catalina Stakes. Baffert also won the renamed Santa Monica Stakes, honored to D. Wayne Lukas, with Splendora. Splendora, a 5-year-old daughter of Audible, recorded her fourth straight victory and her first since last fall's Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, finishing seven furlongs in 1:22.09 by 2 3/4 lengths. Juan Hernandez rode Splendora, who missed the break but recovered with confidence. Baffert expressed emotion remembering Lukas and noted historical ties to the Lewises and Silver Charm.
