The federal government is working on a plan to reduce the number of federal immigration enforcement officers in Minnesota. Operation Metro Surge brought about 3,000 federal agents to the state, led to arrests of undocumented immigrants without criminal records, and coincided with the deaths of two U.S. citizens, Renee Macklin Good and Alex Pretti. Officials say internal changes aim to make the operation safer, more efficient, and by the book. The drawdown plan depends on cooperation from Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. The Minnesota Department of Corrections affirms honoring ICE detainer requests and ICE acknowledged cooperation with state prisons. Command leadership changed after the removal of Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino.
