DA's office asking residents to submit DNA samples to help solve 1993 murder
"DNA collected from crime-scene evidence can be compared against publicly available genealogy databases to identify distant relatives of unknown suspects - sometimes reaching fourth, fifth, or even sixth cousins,"
"Investigators then use those connections to build family trees, narrow down possibilities, and, in some cases, identify offenders who have eluded justice for decades."
"simple cheek swab."
Hampden District Attorney's Office will host a voluntary DNA sample collection in Brimfield on Nov. 9 to seek leads in the 1993 murder of 10-year-old Holly Piirainen. Holly disappeared Aug. 5, 1993 after leaving her grandparents' house to see a litter of puppies near Allen and South Shore roads; her sneaker was later found near South Shore Road. Her skeletal remains were recovered Oct. 23 in a wooded area off Five Bridge Road in Brimfield. A white tank top with 'Boston' was found near the remains in 2021. The event requests a simple cheek swab to compare DNA against public genealogy databases to identify distant relatives and build family trees. Participants will receive full ancestry and family-tree reports for free. The event is the second Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy effort by the office.
