Derby gambling driver jailed over A50 crash - video
"I needed an emergency caesarean due to my baby being in distress... No mother or father should have to go through this. She recounted being separated from her baby across different hospital wards and the trauma of watching her newborn struggle for strength inside an incubator."
"Phone data later examined by investigators showed Bentley had been accessing gambling websites for much of the two-hour drive and was not focused on the road. He was arrested at the scene. He later admitted two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving when he appeared at Derby Crown Court."
Jack Bentley, 30, caused a serious motorway collision on the A50 while distracted by online gambling on his mobile phone. His Ford Focus struck a stationary Nissan X-Trail carrying a pregnant woman and her family. The pregnant woman suffered a fractured pelvis and required emergency caesarean surgery after her baby went into distress. The newborn was born prematurely and spent weeks in intensive care with collapsed lungs. Two other children in the vehicle were injured, and the family dog required emergency surgery. Phone data confirmed Bentley had accessed gambling websites throughout his two-hour journey. He admitted two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and received a sentence of two years and four months imprisonment, plus a three-year driving ban.
