El Salvador's Bukele says 'preposterous' to suggest he return Abrego Garcia to U.S.
Briefly

El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele has stated he is not inclined to return Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran deported from the U.S. despite immigration protections. After an Oval Office meeting with President Trump, Bukele argued against the notion of smuggling a supposed terrorist back into the U.S. U.S. officials emphasized that the decision rests solely with El Salvador, reflecting on the sovereignty of nations in dealing with their citizens. The U.S. administration's involvement is limited to logistical support in facilitating the return.
"The question is preposterous: how can I smuggle a terrorist into the United States?" - Nayib Bukele, emphasizing the absurdity of returning Abrego Garcia to the U.S. despite deportation.
"He's a citizen of El Salvador, so it's very arrogant...to suggest that we would even tell El Salvador, how to handle their own citizens," said Stephen Miller, defending El Salvador's autonomy.
"That's up to El Salvador if they want to return him. That's not up to us," Attorney General Pam Bondi stated, downplaying U.S. obligations regarding Abrego Garcia.
Marco Rubio emphasized that no court in the United States had the right to conduct foreign policy, asserting the importance of sovereign decision-making for El Salvador.
