'Every tourist was freaking out': Alcatraz shuts and then reopens for visitors
"Tours of Alcatraz Island resumed Friday morning after being abruptly closed down the day before due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. By midmorning on Oct. 3, long lines of visitors from the U.S. and abroad stretched outside the Alcatraz City Cruises terminal at Pier 33. Groups of families and friends shuffled forward under sunny skies as they eagerly waited to board ferries that would take them to visit the former island prison where some of America's most infamous criminals were once incarcerated."
""Due to the ongoing government shutdown, all Alcatraz Island tours scheduled for October 2, 2025 have been cancelled," Alcatraz City Cruises announced on social media Thursday. The company offered guests the chance to swap their tickets for a Best of the Bay Cruise trip around the island instead. The company acknowledged the disruption, adding, "We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding.""
"By the next morning, however, operations were back on track, with Alcatraz tours resuming at 10:35 a.m. on Oct. 3 and scheduled to "continue throughout the weekend." Other regularly scheduled tours were set to run, business as usual. "We look forward to welcoming you aboard," the company wrote in its Friday announcement."
Alcatraz Island tours were closed for a day because of the federal government shutdown and resumed the next morning. Long lines of domestic and international visitors gathered at the Alcatraz City Cruises terminal to board ferries under sunny skies. The shutdown initially led to confusion and cancellations on Oct. 2, with the company offering ticket swaps for a Bay cruise and issuing an apology. Tours recommenced at 10:35 a.m. on Oct. 3 and were scheduled to continue throughout the weekend, with other regular tours running normally.
