Federal agents spread out across D.C. streets amid Trump vow to crackdown on crime
Briefly

Federal agents increased their presence in Washington D.C. following President Trump's pledge to address crime and homelessness. Trump insisted that the homeless must vacate immediately, promising accommodations away from the Capitol. He also announced plans to hold a press conference regarding crime in the capital. Despite Trump's claims, crime rates in D.C. have been declining, achieving a 30-year low in violent crime. The federal agents' patrols, involving over 120 reassigned FBI agents, appeared less impactful than anticipated, prompting confusion among locals and concerns from the homeless community.
"The homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY," Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social. "We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital."
In fact, Washington, D.C. has seen declining crime rates in recent years, with violent crime hitting a 30 year low in 2024, according to the U.S. Justice Department.
Groups of uniformed agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration and other agencies could be seen strolling streets in small groups.
But some homeless residents in a camp nearby said they are worried by what they described as Trump's threat to displace them.
