A Cessna C550 business jet crashed near Statesville, North Carolina, erupting into a fire and killing all seven aboard. The plane departed Statesville Regional Airport bound for Florida shortly after 10 a.m. but crashed while attempting to return and land. Victims included retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, children Ryder, 5, and Emma, 14, as well as Dennis Dutton, his son Jack, and Craig Wadsworth. Flight records show the jet was registered to a company run by Biffle, and that Biffle held ratings for helicopters and single- and multi-engine planes. Federal investigators began examining the wreckage; the cause and whether Biffle piloted the flight remain unknown. Weather was drizzly and cloudy, and nearby golfers witnessed the crash. NASCAR issued statements praising Biffle’s impact and career.
