Free parking on Sunday afternoons in Oakland set to disappear at start of new year
"We'd like to keep these spaces turning over. They're not really meant to sit and park all day,"
"I wouldn't like it because we already pay enough,"
"As a senior and on a fixed income, it's a big deal,"
"Problems with the roads. Problems with the people who are unhoused. If we all can chip in a little, we can maybe start solving some of those problems,"
Oakland will begin charging for parking on Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to increase space turnover and improve traffic flow to nearby businesses. The change is expected to generate about $1.3 million annually to help address a projected $40 million budget deficit. Some residents express opposition, citing already-high costs and concerns from seniors and people on fixed incomes who rely on Sundays for errands. Other residents support the fee if revenues help fix roads and address homelessness. The city is increasing enforcement of parking rules and will monitor results and adjust as needed.
