Harvard Law placed Gouvêa on "administrative leave as the school seeks to learn more about this matter." Gouvêa himself graduated from HLS in 2008 and is an associate professor at the University of São Paulo Law School and the CEO of the Global Law Institute."
Visiting Harvard Law professor Carlos Portugal Gouvêa was arrested after a pellet gun was fired in front of Temple Beth Zion during Kol Nidre on Yom Kippur. Temple security called police reporting a man with a gun, and a nearby car showed damage believed to be from a pellet gun. The Temple reported no injuries and said there was no reason to believe the incident was anti‑Semitic. Gouvêa told authorities he used the pellet gun to "hunt rats in the area." He was charged with illegally discharging a pellet gun, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, and malicious damage, released on his recognizance, and placed on administrative leave; a pretrial hearing is set for November 6.
