"The turbulent scene in one of New York City's swankiest neighborhoods began with a plan by far-right provocateur Jake Lang for a "Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City" demonstration near Gracie, the Upper East Side home of New York's first Muslim mayor, Zohran Mamdani."
A violent confrontation occurred Saturday outside Gracie Mansion in Manhattan between far-right protesters led by Jake Lang and counterprotesters. During the clash, at least one counterprotester threw a homemade improvised explosive device capable of causing serious injury or death, according to police analysis. Emir Balat, 18, was arrested for throwing the device and another smoking projectile, while Ibrahim Nikk, 19, was arrested for allegedly supplying one device. Four additional people were arrested, including Ian McGinnis, 21, who pepper-sprayed counterprotesters and faced charges of reckless endangerment, assault, and unlawful possession of noxious matter. No explosions or injuries were reported. The demonstration, organized by Lang near the home of New York's first Muslim mayor, drew over 100 counterprotesters.
