Immigrant detainees sue over 'horrific' conditions at Texas ICE facility
Four detainees filed a federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas alleging human rights abuses at Camp East Montana, the largest ICE detention center in the U.S. The complaint alleges inhumane treatment on the U.S. Army’s Fort Bliss base in El Paso, Texas, including lack of medical care, physical violence by guards, severe beatings or sexual harassment, spoiled and inadequate food, and squalid living conditions. It also alleges limited programming and recreation, inadequate hygiene supplies, disease outbreaks, and limited or no access to sunlight. The suit seeks class-action status and names Gerald Akari Angye, who was allegedly beaten severely enough to require hospitalization and a wheelchair, followed by 15 days in solitary confinement.
"Detained people are regularly subjected to severe beatings or sexual harassment by guards; squalid living conditions; spoiled and inadequate food; no meaningful programming or recreation; inadequate access to basic hygiene products such as soap, razors or nail clippers, outbreaks of disease; and limited or no access to sunlight, according to the complaint."
