His legal team argued that public disclosure would constitute an invasion of privacy causing stigma, harassment, and reputational injury. The lawsuit was filed after the Sag Harbor Village Police Department received a Freedom of Information Law request for the footage. Timberlake's attorneys contended the video contains intimate personal details unrelated to governmental oversight, including information about his family and medical matters. The police department had planned to release redacted clips before Timberlake's legal action.
