In a new study by Dr. Justin Martin at the University of South Florida, the Life in Media Survey examines how technology affects children, particularly their mental wellness. With 78% of respondents owning smartphones and spending considerable time on them—12.3 hours on school days and 14.3 hours during weekends—the research aims to uncover the long-term implications of digital media use on youth. The study plans to track these children for decades to gather comprehensive data on their development in a tech-saturated environment.
The survey showed they spend an average of 12.3 hours on their smartphone and/or tablet on school days, and 14.3 hours on non-school days.
Martin told me, "Our grand goal is to survey digital media use and wellness measures among 11-, 12-, 13-year olds, and then track those same children for the next 25, or 30 years into the future."
