Kilmar Abrego Garcia, deported by the Trump administration, has returned to the U.S. to face trial on smuggling charges. His deportation, considered erroneous, triggered significant protests and was reversed after a Supreme Court ruling. The indictment claims he smuggled undocumented migrants from various countries and was involved with the MS-13 gang. Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized his role as a significant smuggler, including children and women, while Garcia's lawyer dismissed the charges as unfounded. His continued detention will last until his plea on June 13.
"The man has a horrible past, and I could see a decision being made, bring him back, show everybody how horrible this guy is," Trump told reporters on Friday.
According to the indictment, Abrego Garcia was involved in smuggling undocumented migrants from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and other countries into the United States.
After Abrego Garcia had been deported to El Salvador, the White House continued to insist that he was a member of the international criminal gang MS-13.
Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, Abrego Garcia's lawyer, called the criminal charges 'fantastical' and a 'kitchen sink'.
