Landing gear collapse on Alaska Airlines 737 landing in California caused by excessive grinding' during maintenance, NTSB says
Briefly

On August 20, 2023, an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-800 experienced a landing gear failure due to excessive grinding during maintenance, leading to a collapse upon landing at John Wayne-Orange County Airport. Fortunately, no injuries occurred among the 112 passengers and crew members. The National Transportation Safety Board reported that a fatigue crack, which developed after around 4,000 landings post-maintenance in 2018, was the cause of the incident, highlighting maintenance oversights that contributed to the mechanical failure.
The excessive grinding of the surface of the pin likely happened during a maintenance overhaul on July 5, 2018, which made the metal softer and susceptible to failure.
The NTSB stated that a fatigue crack in a metal pin eventually led to the left landing gear's collapse during landing, resulting in emergency evacuation.
