An impersonator posing as a legitimate delivery driver stole about $400,000 worth of lobster destined for Costco locations in Illinois and Minnesota. The theft followed a pattern using spoofed emails and burner phones to hijack high-value freight while it was in transit. The stolen lobsters were dead rather than live. Dead lobster can be consumed safely up to 24 hours from time of death if refrigerated properly at or below 38°F, according to Pine Tree Seafood & Produce Co. Flash-frozen lobster meat is commonly sold, which would extend shelf life if the shipment had been frozen.
