LSU's Lane Kiffin said Ole Miss players wanted him to stay for playoffs. Not so, some Rebels say
"I was hoping to complete a historic six-season run with this year's team by leading Ole Miss through the playoffs, capitalizing on the team's incredible success and their commitment to finish strong, and investing everything into a playoff run with guardrails in place to protect the program in any areas of concern," Kiffin wrote."
"My request to do so was denied by [athletic director] Keith Carter despite the team also asking him to allow me to keep coaching them so they could better maintain their high level of performance."
"'Despite the team asking me to keep coaching,' Sanders wrote, paraphrasing a line from Kiffin's statement."
"'I think everyone that was in that room would disagree.'"
Lane Kiffin said he wanted to remain at Mississippi to coach the Rebels through the College Football Playoffs and claimed players asked him to stay. Kiffin said his request was denied by athletic director Keith Carter despite player support. Several Ole Miss players publicly disputed Kiffin's characterization of their feelings, including leadership council member Brycen Sanders. Keith Carter said Kiffin had known for weeks that postseason coaching would be impossible if he left, creating a direct contradiction with Kiffin's recent statement. Mississippi finished 11-1 and is ranked sixth in the College Football Playoff standings.
