"The attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, also argues prosecutors shouldn't be able to use evidence collected from Mangione's backpack, which she claims police should have gotten a warrant to search when Mangione was handcuffed in a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in the days following the December attack. Lawyers are also looking to suppress Mangione's initial comments to police at the fast-food restaurant."
"After the shooting, prosecutors say, Mangione cycled away on an e-bike and led law enforcement on a manhunt that lasted several days. Five days later, police in Altoona arrested Mangione after another McDonald's customer recognized him as the person she'd seen in images released by the NYPD, and called authorities. The officers who arrested Mangione found a 9 mm handgun, ammunition and a handwritten manifesto that was critical of health care companies in the United States, prosecutors say."
Luigi Mangione filed a motion to dismiss the murder and firearms counts in a four-count federal indictment and to suppress evidence recovered from his backpack. Attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo contends police should have obtained a warrant to search the backpack after handcuffing Mangione in a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and seeks suppression of his initial comments to officers. Prosecutors allege Mangione shot and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on West 54th Street in December 2024, fled on an e-bike, and was arrested five days later in Altoona, where officers found a 9 mm handgun, ammunition and a handwritten manifesto critical of health care companies. Mangione faces charges in both state and federal court.
