Mallon: 2026 sports events will test Silicon Valley's transit system - San Jose Spotlight
"As the Bay Area gets ready to host Super Bowl 60 at Levi's Stadium this February, transit agencies are ramping up preparation. With tens of thousands of fans expected from across the country - and the 2026 FIFA World Cup later in the year - getting people to and from the Levi's Stadium quickly, safely and reliably is a top priority for VTA, Caltrain, BART and other transit agencies."
"During the Taylor Swift Eras Tour stop in 2023, VTA broke the previous Levi's Stadium ridership record with an estimated 23,400 boardings. That number was more than twice the Super Bowl 50 ridership, underscoring just how much demand transit can see during major events. Agencies, including VTA and Caltrain, ran extra service to meet the surge and ultimately carried all passengers."
As the Bay Area prepares to host Super Bowl 60 at Levi's Stadium this February, transit agencies are ramping up preparations. Tens of thousands of fans are expected from across the country, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup later in the year will add further demand. Past events show demand spikes: VTA carried about 9,500 riders for Super Bowl 50 and an estimated 23,400 boardings during the 2023 Taylor Swift Eras Tour. Agencies ran extra service to meet surges and ultimately carried all passengers, but unprecedented demand produced longer boarding times and multi-hour crowd clearances. Agencies and partners have coordinated for years and plan additional trains, buses, schedule and staffing adjustments to increase frequency and capacity for major events.
