Tony Vance, 41, was sentenced to 15 to 18 years in state prison for manslaughter, plus a concurrent four- to five-year sentence for possession of a loaded firearm without a license and two years of probation. Vance was arrested in October 2023 and initially charged with murder after opening fire on a crowd on Aug. 27, 2022 near 970 Blue Hill Ave. in Dorchester during the Caribbean Carnival. Derrell Russell, 33, was shot in the torso, taken to Boston Medical Center, and later died. The victim's fiancée described the lifelong loss and an unborn child who will never meet him. The Suffolk County District Attorney condemned the killing and highlighted the consequences of illegal guns used amid a community celebration.
