Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has initiated legal action against Google for renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, as directed by a decree from former President Donald Trump. Sheinbaum states that Google should differentiate the nomenclature appropriately between U.S. and Mexican territorial waters. Following this, Google has confirmed its adherence to U.S. geographic naming conventions. The renaming, motivated by Trump's intent to honor 'American greatness,' only holds validity within the U.S., leading to diplomatic tensions with Mexico and a call for international recognition of the Gulf's historic name.
"Google is already being sued. There has already been a first resolution, and it is awaited," Sheinbaum said at a press conference.
"What we are saying is that Google should put Gulf of America, where it is Gulf of America, which is the part that corresponds to the territory of the United States, and put Gulf of Mexico to the territorial part that corresponds to Mexico and Cuba."
"Trump's order only applies within the US. Mexico, other countries, and international bodies do not have to recognize the change."
