On Aug. 27 a shooter entered Annunciation Church during the first mass of the school year, killing two children and injuring eighteen others, including fifteen children and three adults. Laura DuSchane, eight months pregnant, had just walked her 3-year-old son Rory to preschool across the street when she heard continuous gunfire and saw smoke. She climbed onto a table to look, asked neighbors what to do, and then jogged toward the school despite warnings to turn back. DuSchane encountered police and wounded children, entered the school, located Rory's classroom, and warned his teacher there was an active shooter. Surviving students, family members of the deceased, and other community members have spoken publicly about the impact.
'What do I do? My kid is in the school.'
"I said, 'I'm running up there. I have to go find my kid,'" she recalled responding.
"I had run past a lot of trauma already," DuSchane said. "I saw kids filing out of the church. I saw my neighbor helping bloodied kids out of the church, and I think I was like, I can't really spend too much time looking at this because I know what I'm seeing is really bad."
