"In January of this year, Jonathan Evans, president and CEO of Lithium Americas, announced that Thacker Pass, which is located in the caldera, is the largest lithium reserve in the world. The mine planned for that area, which has an 85-year life span, is slated to unfold over several phases, and while no lithium has been pulled from the earth there yet, construction on the mine is well underway. The only lithium mine currently in production in the U.S. is located in Nevada's Esmeralda County."
"Located about 60 miles from Winnemucca in Nevada's Humboldt County, the massive Thacker Pass project is predicted to generate thousands of jobs, $2.1 billion in economic activity, and $122.3 million in personal income in the region. Tom Burns, the executive director of Nevada's Governor's Office of Economic Development, recently said that lithium will be a key driver behind the state's economic growth."
Nearly 50 years ago, USGS scientists found anomalously high concentrations of lithium in the McDermitt caldera along the Nevada-Oregon border. The caldera and Thacker Pass are now identified as massive lithium reserves, potentially the largest worldwide, located in Nevada. Lithium Americas announced Thacker Pass as the largest reserve; the planned mine has an 85-year lifespan, phased development, and construction underway though no lithium has yet been extracted. The project is expected to generate thousands of jobs, $2.1 billion in regional economic activity, and $122.3 million in personal income. Nevada operates mining and processing capabilities that create a full domestic lithium loop.
