New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced a plan for state police to establish a “peaceful protest zone” outside the Delaney Hall ICE detention center in Newark. The goal is to cool tensions after repeated clashes between protesters and ICE officers and to remove ICE from security operations outside the facility. Attorney General Jennifer Davenport said state police would take over public safety operations from ICE outside Delaney Hall. Sherrill said adding ICE has made the situation less safe and that the state is working to get ICE out of the situation. State police previously directed traffic around the site to protect protesters after a person was struck by a vehicle. Moving forward, checkpoints will be used and large protest zones will be encircled by 600 yards of bicycle racks, with areas also set aside for pro-ICE protesters.
"“We all need to do everything we can to cool things down now,” Sherrill said at a press conference announcing the plan. “I will not give ICE the pretext to expand operations in our state.” The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday afternoon. But state officials made clear their goal was for ICE to no longer be involved in security operations outside Delaney Hall."
